"West Yorkshire Archive Service exists to collect, organise and preserve the county's heritage of historical documents dating from the 12th Century to the present day. It aims to make them available for use and to promote the study of the county's history through these unique archival records. WYAS offers a range of services to new and existing users to widen access and to support projects taking place in the community." We aim to reach the widest possible audience and engage in community based projects and activities and work to bring as many people as possible into contact with archives. We also offer services to allow more people to learn and make discoveries about archives and what WYAS can offer. Talks and visits to the archive service can be arranged to introduce new and potential visitors to the service, alongside more detailed and specialised activities for more frequent visitors and people with specific needs. For more information please visits our Talks and Visits page.
The service is also currently working on guides to support community projects. These will soon be available and include topics such as 'Recording Oral History' 'Storing Documents' and many more. Once complete these will be available on the website - March 2008. WYAS's Education and Outreach Manger and project workers are available to advise and support communities who are developing or working on heritage projects. The NowThen website can host communities archives, oral histories and other research allowing it to reach a wider audience. This site also contains the This is Our History community archives that we have helped to develop. We are also keen to link to other community based sites to allow wider access. Please visit the site or contact the Education and Outreach Manager at educationandoutreach@wyjs.org.uk for more information or advice.
