SERVICES TO DEPOSITORS

We are always interested to hear from people who have records relating to West Yorkshire which they would like to deposit with us. These could be written documents on paper or parchment, maps, photographs or even film or electronic disks. Further information can be found in our Collection Policy. Records can be accepted either as a gift – ensuring their public availability for the future – or on deposit, with the depositor retaining legal ownership.

Even if you are unsure whether or not we will be interested in what you have, please contact us for advice. If the items you have relate to places outside West Yorkshire, we can give you the details for our colleagues at record offices in other areas.

The services we offer to depositors include:

  • External visits and survey work, to identify historically important material prior to deposit
  • Storage in environmentally monitored strongrooms, with fire and intruder protection
  • Cataloguing and indexing, according to overall Service priorities
  • Inclusion on the Service’s online computer catalogue
  • Conservation, as appropriate to the overall programme of the Archive Service

There may be a charge for some of these services.

Records deposited by a Church of England ecclesiastical parish within the Dioceses of Bradford, Ripon and Leeds, and Wakefield, are held by the Service in accordance with the terms of the Parochial Registers of Records Measure 1978.
