Activity sheets

WYAS
offers downloadable activity sheets and supporting documents on a wide
range of topics, designed to be used by teachers to support classroom
activity. Some need additional resources, some of which can be borrowed
from the Education and Outreach Team at WYAS. In some cases it may also
be possible for someone to come into the school and deliver the
activities – see the Archives in the Classroom page for the lessons on offer.
Please
contact the Head of Audience Engagement and Learning for more
information or to talk about what we can offer your school.

The introduction to this activity sheet explains the origins of Coats of Arms and the elements that combine to make a Coat of Arms. The activity encourages children to be creative and design their own.
This activity can be expanded to look at how coats of arms have developed into things like schools badges, football club badges and many of the branding logos we see every day. The template can be used to design new schools badges as well as coats of arms.

Document Seals
The introduction to this activity sheet explains the origins of seals and the activity encourages children to be creative and design their own. This activity can be linked to the Create Your Own Charter activity or Inventory activity and once the document has been created it can be completed by adding the seal.
Modelling wax is required for this activity. |
Inventory
This activity sheet looks briefly at why people kept lists. It’s a great activity to support a time capsule project or a local history project allowing the children to record what life is like now. There are two options as the activity can be done using items in the classroom (or other rooms in the school) or based on what is in bedrooms.
Royal Charter
The introduction to this activity sheet explains the origins of Royal Charters and the different parts that make up a Charter. The activity encourages children to be creative and design their own thinking about what rights or gifts a charter might have given.

Handwriting
The
introduction to this activity sheet looks at handwriting and the
implements used to write over time. The
activity is then in two parts, firstly an exercise in reading
handwriting and then an opportunity to try writing using old letter
styles.
It is possible to extend this activity to also use quill pens and/or nib pens and ink. WYAS service have some which can be loaned out.
