Data protection
• The Data Protection Act 1998 aims to protect an individual’s rights in respect to personal data.
• Data Protection is particularly relevant for records such as
adoption, probation, police and prison records, as well as records of
any organisation containing sensitive personal information.
Many of the archives we hold contain sensitive personal data and the Data Protection Act ensures we protect individuals buy restricting access to these records. We will provide access and copies where harm will not be caused to the named individuals, there may be occassions on which we need to redact or tie-off portions of the document. Staff will advise on the restrictions and what options there are for access.
