Further and Higher Education

West Yorkshire Archive Service offers a range of services to support Further and Higher Education. These include:

Group Visits

For whole or part classes to the archives to support a topic being taught or to generally introduce archives to students.

Lectures and Talks

We can offer an introduction lecture on archives and visiting the WYAS. This can be delivered at any point during the year but often works well at the start in the induction period.

CARN readers tickets sign up

Either as part of and introduction talk or as a activity by itself, we can sign up students to the CARN readers ticket at their place of study. CARN is used at numerous archives across the country and will mean that their first visit to WYAS will be less intimidating.

Student Leaflet

We have a leaflet giving information

See INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS page

Information for Lecturers

WYAS, where possible, likes to work alongside lecturers to support their lectures and private study. We are happy to develop private programmes and to offer advice to any lecturer planning on sending students to the archive service.

We ask that lecturers bear the following in mind when planning their courses.

  • •Email an outline of study topics to us so that we can confirm what documents we have and what we will be able to make available.
  • •If lecturers want to set group tasks for their students that involve visiting an archive, could they please liaise with the appropriate office first.
  • •Advise students that not everything can be copied for a variety of reasons, copyright being an important one (also due to age, size and condition of documents) especially for building plans
  • •Remember data protection - not everything is available to look at, especially if under 100 years old e.g. medical and criminal records.
  • •Encourage students to read secondary sources before coming to us for primary sources.
  • •Make students aware that some documents maybe in Latin and many will be in ‘old’ handwriting and therefore reading and understanding the documents may take time.
  • •Tell students to make appointments and see our website for opening hours.
  • •Tell students to use our online catalogue. Having catalogue numbers will assist them when they visit, this also allows them to develop a new skill.
  • •Encourage students to leave plenty of time to do the research, visiting the archives once is not likely to be enough. Documents are often held off site and we may not be able to produce them on the same day they are ordered.
