Group Visits to Archive Offices

Groups are welcome to arrange visits to our offices, usually outside of opening hours, encompassing an introduction to the archive service and a display of selected archives, relating to their local area or topic of their choice.


Visits are offered to societies, students and adult learning groups.

A charge of £2 to £5 per student is made for educational visits.

Groups of adult learners can also book introductory, standard or specialist group visits.














Office details


Calderdale

The Calderdale Office, based in Halifax Central Library, can offer visits on a wide variety of subjects.


Bradford

The Bradford Office is based in Bradford Central Library.


Kirklees

The Kirklees Office based in Huddersfield Library and Art Gallery and has limited space for group visits.


Leeds

The Leeds office can offer a variety of visits.

The Leeds Office does not provide easy access for people with mobility difficulties. With the searchroom only accessible via a flight of stairs. Parking in the area can be difficult.


Wakefield

The Wakefield Office, housing the West Riding Registry of Deeds and the WYAS Conservation Studio can offer the most varied visits.

The Wakefield Office does not provide easy access for people with mobility difficulties with the external entrance accessible via a flight of stairs.







Visit details

Visits can include the chance to use finding aids to discover what our offices hold, handle original documents and learn about using archives for research.


We offer three types of visit:


Introductory Visit – lasting up to 1.5 hours

  • • An introduction to West Yorkshire Archive Service
  • • Information on visiting archive offices
  • • How to use archive finding aids and our online catalogue
  • • The chance to view original archives selected by staff based on the nature and geographic location of the group.

Standard Visit – lasting between 1 to 2 hours

  • • An introduction West Yorkshire Archive Service
  • • Viewing specially selected archives; the choice of archives will be made by staff in conjunction with the group leader.
  • • Where available this visit could include a behind the scenes tour

Specialist Visit

  • • Tailored to suit individual groups
  • • Either viewing a quantity of documents
  • • Or specific documents for a longer period of time.

To book a visit initially contact the office you are interested in visiting.

Then download a booking form, complete and return it to the appropriate office.

Charges may be waived for voluntary and community sector organisations.


We try our hardest to satisfy all the requests we receive for group visits to our offices. But priority will be given to individuals new to the archive service and groups that have not previously visited.
